Eating cereal for both breakfast and lunch for six weeks could lead to a significant amount of weight loss, it has been claimed.
Researchers at Oxford Brookes University asked 41 overweight or obese people to follow this regime, eating whatever they wanted for their evening meal.
After two weeks, 85 per cent of the participants had lost more than four pounds in weight.
At the end of the six weeks, body weight had dropped in 67 per cent of people eating one type of cereal, while 78 per cent of people eating more than one sort had lost weight.
"The results of this study are very interesting and further evidence of the benefits of breakfast cereal as part of a weight-management programme," nutritionist Lynne Garton told the Daily Express.
The Food Standards Agency recommends that people should choose puffed wheat, wheat biscuits or muesli with no added salt for breakfast.
