Detox claims are disturbing, says scientist
A toxicologist has said he finds it disturbing that so many companies are using the word 'detox' without any proper knowledge of its meaning.
Director-general of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association Dr Chris Flower's comments come after new research from the charitable trust Sense About Science found that many claims made by the manufacturers of so-called detox products were wordy but meaningless.
He said that before making such claims on food packaging, manufacturers should be aware that detox is strictly defined and may not apply to such products.
"I find it rather sad that the word has been hijacked and loosely interpreted in a way where no one really knows what they are saying," Dr Flower commented.
He added that any claims made should be supported by real scientific evidence in order to avoid misleading consumers.
Experts concede that rather than participating in detox, people should simply eat healthily and catch up on the sleep they may have lost recently.
