Consumers in the UK could be wasting their time and money on products which claim to detox the body, but are not scientifically proven to do so.
This is according to new research from the charitable trust Sense About Science, which tested 15 products and found that none had the same definition for the word 'detox', while many claims made by their manufacturers were wordy but meaningless.
The researchers said that most people would get the same benefits simply from eating healthily and catching up on the sleep they may have lost over the festive season.
Alice Tuff, spokesperson for Sense About Science, said: "It is ridiculous that we're seeing a return to mystical properties being claimed for products in the 21st century and I'm really pleased that young scientists are sharing their concerns about this with the public."
Professor Michael Lean, a nutrition scientist at the University of Glasgow, recently told the Mirror that people in the UK are wasting billions of pounds every year on foods promoted as 'diet' or 'light', but are actually be full of fat or sugar.
