Diet and exercise 'go against body's functions'


People who learn how to enjoy their food will be able to lose weight more effectively than those who embark on diets, one expert has claimed.

According to therapist and trainer Diarmuid Lavelle, author of the Sensual Slimmer, over 99 per cent of overweight people eat too quickly.

This causes them to crave salty, fatty, sugary foods which have stronger flavours and which they will have time to taste.

Mr Lavelle said obesity cannot be tackled simply by telling people to eat healthy foods, but that they should be encouraged to eat more slowly, as well as helped with their self esteem issues.

"Dieting, disliking our bodies and arduous exercise routines actually go against the way normal people function," he told the Galway Advertiser.

Last month, Carel Le Roux, an obesity expert from the Imperial College London, told the Daily Mail that humans are "genetically wired" to put on weight and dieting makes this worse.
