Diets have been condemned to failure by an expert, it has been reported.
Carel Le Roux, an obesity expert at Imperial College, London, said that diets do not work effectively when people are trying to lose weight, the Daily Mail reports.
The newspaper notes that bodies are genetically designed to put on weight and that dieting can in fact increase this rate.
Bodies go into "starvation mode" when people start their efforts to lose weight and therefore reduce the amount of energy that is used, which in turn makes it harder to shed the pounds, the paper notes reports him as saying.
"[Obesity initiatives] don't acknowledge that in the huge majority of cases, diets don't work, and in failing to do so, they are condemning thousands of obese and morbidly obese people to miserable failure," the weight expert told the paper.
In related news, a recent study has found that eating a big breakfast can help to reduce desire for snacking during the rest of the day, which can help to aid weight loss. The research was conducted by a team led by Dr Daniela Jakubowicz from the Hospital de Clinicas in Caracas, Venezuela.
