Ditch the diet and relax instead

Women who follow a programme of yoga and meditation may have more success when it comes to weight loss than people who follow restrictive diets.

This is according to researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand, who studied groups of women.

One group followed a programme of yoga, meditation and positive visualisation, while another focused purely on exercise and nutrition.

The women in the first group had an average weight loss of five-and-a-half pounds, a more significant loss than those who dieted and exercised.

Dr Caroline Horwath, who led the study, said: "The positive results are exciting, given the limited long-term success of traditional dieting approaches."

It is thought that yoga worked because reducing stress also reduced cravings for fatty foods.

Newsday recently cited a report from the Harvard Health Letter, which showed that diets such as Atkins could lower levels of the mood-improving hormone seratonin, which could in turn give people fatigue and bad moods.
