Anyone who fears putting on weight over Christmas could avoid doing so easily by making a few food swaps in order to reduce their intake of fat and calories.
This is according to dietician Julie Nedin, who told Wales Online that it is possible to treat the taste buds without having to add an extra notch to the belt.
Firstly, she suggests, swap sausage rolls for cocktail sausages at the buffet table to avoid calorific pastry and opt for breadsticks and houmous instead of fatty crisps and dips.
When it comes to sweet things, Ms Nedin advises not to avoid mince pies or cake completely as it will leave you feeling deprived.
Instead, just have a dessert every so often instead of after every meal and go for a few squares of quality chocolate instead of eating a whole selection box.
"The message throughout not only Christmas and the New Year but all year round, is not to ban anything which you really enjoy, but to have only a small portion if it's heavy on the fat, salt or sugar," the expert points out.
