Eating a diet rich in fried food, salt and meat as many people in the western world do could be causing a third of all heart attack deaths, one study has claimed.
Research from the Population Health Research Institute in Ontario, Canada, looked at a range of different diets across the world and found that the adoption of a more western diet in poorer countries could be putting them at risk of the prevalence of heart attacks experienced in more developed countries.
The 'Western diet' - which included salty food and snacks - resulted in a 35 per cent increase in heart attack risk.
However, the 'Prudent diet' - common in Africa and categorised by large amounts of vegetables and fruit - resulted in 30 per cent less risk.
Dr Sonia Anand, a medical professor involved in the study, said: "Diet is serious for the individual, but also if we can make population-level changes, we can prevent a lot of heart attacks, using relatively simple measures."
Anyone who feels they may be eating too much Western food is advised to reduce their intake of fatty foods in favour of a more nutritionally-balanced diet.
They may also wish to consider attempting a diet using weight loss supplements.
