Eating legumes 'could aid weight loss'

Eating legumes such as beans, peas, peanuts, lentils and soybeans on a regular basis could help people to lose weight and keep it off, new research has suggested.

Itziar Abete, a scientist at the University of Navarra, did tests on different groups of people who were fed varying amounts of legumes.

It was discovered that the people who ate such foods four times a week were more likely to feel full and therefore to not overeat than people who only ate legumes irregularly.

Not only this, but the low glycemic index of a diet rich in legumes helped the weight that was lost to stay off for participants.

Legumes are also low in fat and contain no cholesterol, but are high in protein, iron and fibre.

Earlier this month, the American Peanut Council said the nut is set to make a comeback as people seek cheap, healthy alternatives to processed snacks.
