Eating too quickly could double the risk of a person becoming overweight, it has been found.
A study by researchers at Osaka University in Japan found that men who wolfed down their food were 84 per cent more likely to develop weight problems, while women who ate quickly were approximately 50 per cent more likely to become overweight.
"If you eat slowly then there is some feedback from the brain that this is enough and this helps stop you eating before you are full," said Professor Hiroyasu Iso, who led the research.
The growing trend of eating meals in front of the television or while on the move was blamed for the fact that more people seem to be gulping down their dinner rather than savouring every bite, suggesting that the old wives' tale of chewing each mouthful 20 times may not be such a bad idea after all.
In other news, Knocked Up actor Seth Rogan has told E! News that he has had to lose weight for his new movie The Green Hornet, admitting that he had "sold out" to Hollywood, but that he expects to become more rotund again once he has finished filming.
