Exercise overload 'could lead to new year burnout'


Losing weight is one of the most common new year resolutions - but one fitness expert has warned that overloading on exercise could quickly lead to burnout.

Gym owner Mike McKinney told WMBB News 13 that the second week in January usually sees a bump in the number of people working out as they try to put their good intentions for 2009 into effect.

However, he warned that going all-out early on can overwhelm the body and lead to a new year resolution to exercise falling by the wayside.

Mr McKinney said exercisers "have to pace themselves".

"Don't try to do it every day and just burn yourself out on just chicken and broccoli and working out all the time," he commented.
