Fad diets 'not a good idea'

Fad diets that are high in protein but low in carbohydrates may not be a good idea for people who are interested in achieving long-term weight loss, according to a wellness centre director.

While magazines sing the praises of these weight-loss ideas, Seventh-Day Adventist Wellness Centre director Keith Horinouchi asserted they may do more harm than good, according to KUAM News' Health Check.

Mr Horinouchi explained that "yo-yo" dieting in this way reduces muscle tone and increases body fat, with no long-term benefits.

He added that high-protein and low-carb diets can also cause a range of health complications as a result of nutrition deficiencies - including an increased risk of heart disease and strain on the kidneys.

A better option, he suggested, is to make a lifestyle change - which is not considered to be a diet - including regular balanced meals.

Recent research carried out by the Harvard School of Public Health found that counting calories is the best way for people to manage their diets - rather than opting for low-carbohydrate or high-protein plans.
