So-called diet foods have again been slammed after a study found that they are often no better in terms of nutrition than their standard counterparts.
Earlier this month, Professor Michael Lean, a nutrition scientist at the University of Glasgow, told the Mirror that people in the UK are wasting billions of pounds every year on foods that are supposed to be healthy but may actually be full of fat or sugar.
Now, research carried out by Which? has found the same - for example, Kellogg's Special K actually contains more sugar than its Corn Flakes, while McVitie's Lights digestive biscuits also have more sugar than the original varieties.
Head of Which? services research Nikki Ratcliff said: "If you're looking for a New Year quick-fix to shed a few pounds, weight-loss products aren't the answer."
She advised shoppers to check the labels of products, since foods that do not feature the word 'light' on the label may be better nutritionally.
