Eating a diet rich in fish, olive oil and nuts could offer significant health benefits and may help people to lose weight, new research has suggested.
Scientists at the University of Rovira i Virgili in Spain found that waistlines, blood pressure and cholesterol levels decreased by 14 per cent after a year of sticking to such a regime.
This was compared to a reduction of only two per cent for people on an ordinary low-fat diet.
Dr Jordi Salas-Salvado, one of the authors of the study, said: "A non-energy-restricted traditional Mediterranean diet enriched with nuts, which is high in fat, high in unsaturated fat and palatable, is a useful tool in managing the metabolic syndrome."
In August, it was reported by Tenerife News that the Mediterranean diet could be officially listed by Unesco and protected along with languages and buildings as of next year.
A decision will be made on the proposal in 2009.
