The government has said that food on restaurant menus should be labelled with its fat and calorie content in a bid to reduce levels of obesity in the UK.
Public health minister Dawn Primarolo said British restaurants should follow in the footsteps of those in New York, where food is already labelled.
She also said that advertising junk food should be banned at certain times and that items of fatty food such as chocolate bars should be made smaller.
"I know there will be difficulties for independent restaurants, but we have to start somewhere. Why can’t we have calorie content on all menus in chain restaurants?," Ms Primarolo commented to the Daily Mail.
A number of fast food outlets in the UK, such as McDonalds and Subway, already have calorie and fat guidelines printed onto menus and placemats.
