Diets which restrict the amount of carbohydrates its followers can consume could impair the memory, new research has discovered.
Regimes such as Atkins, which encourage people to cut out bread, pasta and potatoes, were found to impair the memory of the subjects of a study in only a week, according to researchers at Tufts University in Massachusetts.
The scientists found that there was a gradual decline in ability to perform tasks which needed the use of memory in the people following low or no carbohydrate diets when compared with people on a simple low-fat diet.
Professor Holly Taylor, who led the study, said: "The popular low-carb, no-carb diets have the strongest potential for negative impact on thinking and cognition. It suggests that diets can affect more than just weight."
People wanting to lose significant amounts of weight are advised to follow a nutritionally-balanced diet rather than a trendy regime, potentially using weight loss supplements if they wish to complement this.
