Short-term fasting 'could do the body good'

Taking time to fast for short intervals of time could have benefits for those who are trying to lose weight and improve their health, a doctor has suggested.

According to Mark P Mattson, chief of the neurosciences laboratory at the US-based National Institute on ageing, studies carried out on animals found that fasting and restricting calories on an intermittent basis decreased cognitive decline in age-related diseases, including Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.

Furthermore, a study published in the American Journal of Cardiology last October found that people belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may have a lower risk of heart disease compared to most other Americans - due in part to the fact that many abstain from eating food on the first Sunday of each month.

However, other scientists have dismissed the so-called "detox myth", stating that people simply need to eat well and get plenty of rest to get the greatest health benefits.
