Yo-yo dieting 'is not a sensible habit'

People who need to lose weight should not attempt to do so by following a yo-yo diet, one expert has said.

Nutritionist Carina Norris told the Mirror that this is a hard habit to break and that it can be counterproductive.

"When you lose weight too quickly you lose muscle, not fat. The less muscle you have, the harder it is to burn calories," she commented.

The nutritionist added that eating too few calories all of a sudden will lead to the body laying down more fat stores, as it is going into starvation mode.

Ms Norris recommended instead that those people who want to lose weight should do so by following a diet that is not too restrictive in its number of calories.

Last month, researchers from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health stated that 13 million adults in Britain - or one in three - will be classed as obese by 2012.
