An egg a day 'is still okay'

Although the advertising slogan of the 1950s and 60s encouraged Britons to go to work on an egg, many people have limited their intake of the humble product recently for fear of getting high cholesterol.

However, it seems that these fears were unfounded and the British Nutrition Foundation has now said it is nutritionally okay to eat one egg a day.

Although the cholesterol found in eggs does have a slight impact on blood cholesterol, it was found to be insignificant when compared to that found in foods containing saturated fats.

Bruce Griffin, professor of nutritional metabolism at the University of Surrey, said: "The UK public does not need to be limiting the number of eggs they eat."

However, the public may not wish to eat as many eggs as the advertising giant Charles Saatchi - he recently lost four stone in nine months through eating nothing but three eggs at each meal.
