Beware killer fats, Britons urged

A new campaign is to be launched by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) aimed at getting people to cut the amount of saturated fat they consume.

The watchdog has found that people in the UK currently eat around 20 per cent more of these fats than is recommended per day, potentially putting them at increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, as well as obesity.

It will urge Britons to eat less crisps, biscuits, cakes, cheese and sausages, swapping them for foods such as salmon, peas and broccoli.

According to the Guardian, the FSA states that cutting consumption of saturated fat could save 3,500 lives a year.

Last month, research by the Local Authority Coordinators of Regulatory Services found that doner kebabs are "shockingly" unhealthy, with the average example containing around 1,000 calories, which is half the daily allowance for a woman.

They were also found to be particularly high in salt.
