The amount of people being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes has increased sharply, with one person now being identified as having the disease every three minutes in Britain.
This is according to figures from Diabetes UK, which showed that 2.5 million people in Britain have the disease and as many as 500,000 could have it but not know.
Douglas Smallwood, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said that the rise is partly due to obesity, sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating and that four million people could be diabetes sufferers by 2025 if nothing is done.
"People need to be supported to make changes to their lifestyle, such as eating healthily, losing weight if appropriate and being physically active, in order to reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes," he concluded.
Obese people are around ten times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, which develops when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly.
