Credit crunch 'could improve our health'

The credit crunch could be good for the nation's health by bringing back a wartime mentality when it comes to buying food, it has been claimed.

Food experts Joanna Blythman and Rosa Prince, speaking at the Times Cheltenham Literature Festival, said there are a number of ways in which Britons could save money and improve their health by changing what they purchase amid their weekly shop.

Firstly, the duo suggest buying cheaper cuts of meat such as breast of lamb as opposed to prime cuts, as well as making soup with the leftovers instead of buying it.

In addition, farm shops may be a better source of cheaper produce than supermarkets, while seasonality is an important factor to consider, as abundant food will be cheaper.

"We could potentially be more like the sort of nation we were during the Second World War - it wasn't so easy to get hold of food and we really had to focus on growing things ourselves, cooking things, making a lot out of a little," said Ms Blythman, according to the Times.

Anyone who feels they may not be able to afford fresh produce during the credit crunch may wish to try a weight loss supplement such as Night & Day.
