The squeeze that most people are feeling on their finances is encouraging many to take a packed lunch to work rather than buy it from a shop.
Dr Frankie Phillips of the British Dietetic Association said this is a good thing, as it is likely to save workers a great deal of money.
It could also see an improvement in the nation's health, as home-made sandwiches are less likely to be drenched in fattening dressings as those purchased from shops.
Dr Phillips said that making your own meal up at home will reduce the temptation to buy additional items such as drinks and snacks.
"At a time when you are trying to save money, your lunch from home is going to be more cost-effective for you," she concluded.
According to an ActionAid survey carried out recently, 62 per cent of people working in human resources take less than half an hour for lunch and 20 per cent of these people eat their lunch at their desks.
The trend of eating on the hoof has been blamed for rising levels of obesity, because people may be less able to register when they are full if they are not concentrating properly on eating.
