People who are overweight should not be put off dancing through embarrassment or because they feel they will not be able to do it, one expert has said.
Dawn DeMendonca, founder of online dance studio DanceMass, said that being slim is not a requirement when it comes to dancing and it can also be done in the home.
"There are some great dancers out there who are bigger in size and can move really well," she commented.
Ms DeMendonca added that dancing is one of the best methods of keeping fit available, because participants can burn around 256 calories per session, as well as improving flexibility and coordination.
She urged people in the UK to give it a go, pointing out: There are so many people out there who want to learn to dance, but are embarrassed to go to a dance class in the real world."
According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, women are more likely to participate in aerobics, keep-fit and dancing as forms of exercise than men.
