More people should take up dancing in order to get fit and possibly lose some weight, one expert has said.
Dr David Haslam, chair of the National Obesity Forum, said he thimks dancing should be encouraged because of the health benefits it offers, as well as the fact that it is a social activity.
"I think dancing is just about the right level of activity: it's brisk but not too vigorous, it's cardiovascular rather than muscle-building and as I said, it is enjoyable," he pointed out.
According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, women are more likely to participate in aerobics, keep-fit and dancing as forms of exercise than men, even though dancing can burn more than 200 calories per hour-long session.
Meanwhile, government figures suggest that up to 90 per cent of the British population could be obese by 2050 if nothing is done to curb the increase in waistlines currently being experienced.
