New research carried out in the US has discovered that the cost of treating cases of diabetes has doubled since 2002.
Scientists from the University of Chicago and Stanford University found that the cost has shot up to $12.5 billion (£7.99 billion) as patients receive newer, more expensive drugs.
The rise in the number of cases was attributed to the increasingly sedentary nature of Americans, which could have implications for other nations with similar lifestyles.
Dr Caleb Alexander, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, said: "We were surprised by the magnitude of the changes and the rapid increase in the cost of diabetes care."
People who are obese are around ten times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, which is when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly.
According to figures released by Diabetes UK, more than 167,000 new cases were diagnosed between April 2007 and March 2008
