'Diet foods' slammed by health professional


Consumers have been urged not to waste their money on so-called diet foods by one health expert.

Professor Michael Lean, a nutrition scientist at the University of Glasgow, told the Mirror that people in the UK are wasting billions of pounds every year on foods that are supposed to be healthy but may actually be full of fat or sugar.

"Foods are positioned and promoted in such a way that consumers are likely to be misled," he warned.

Professor Lean pointed out that some cereal bars have the same fat content as chocolate bars, while so-called fruit drinks may be made entirely from artificial flavourings.

He suggested choosing natural yoghurt or fruit instead of such items.
