Do as the Bible says, not as its people ate?

Although churchgoers may be keen to follow the teachings of the Bible as closely as they can, they may not want to follow the diet the people mentioned inside did.

This is according to Dr Nathan MacDonald, an Old Testament lecturer at St Andrews University, who told the BBC that Israel in those days was not so much the land of milk and honey as the land of famine and mineral deficiency.

"The diet in biblical times was not very healthy. It provided the necessary calories, but was lacking in certain key vitamins and minerals," he commented.

Dr MacDonald added that although Israelites limited their intake of red meat, this was not balanced out by an increase in the intake of fruit and vegetables, while frequent famines meant that food shortages were rife.

Meanwhile, food experts Joanna Blythman and Rosa Prince, speaking at the Times Cheltenham Literature Festival in October, said that the credit crunch could be good for the nation's health by bringing back a wartime mentality when it comes to buying food.
