Pregnant women have been warned that, while they should gain some weight during pregnancy, putting on excessive amounts could be harmful for both themselves and their babies.
According to a study by the Kaiser Permanente Centre for Health Research, mothers who gain more than 40 pounds (18.1 kilograms) could store up a lifetime of problems for the child, including heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
In addition, heavier babies increase the likelihood of a caesarean delivery as opposed to a natural birth.
Teresa Hillier, an endocrinologist and senior researcher at the medical centre, said that gaining too much weight simply equates to overfeeding the baby and altering its metabolism.
"Our study provides one more good reason to gain [only] the ideal weight during pregnancy," she concluded.
Baby Centre advises that pregnant women should expect to gain around 24.2 pounds (11 kilograms) as a result of changes in the weight of their blood, their womb, their amniotic fluids, their breasts and of course, their baby.
