Don't rely solely on 'superfoods', consumers warned

Consumers could be depriving themselves of essential nutrients if they rely on so-called superfoods, a newspaper has warned.

According to US publication the Whitworthian, shoppers are encouraged to buy foods such as spinach, goji berries and yoghurt because of the publicity surrounding their health benefits.

However, Katherine Zeratsky, specialty editor for the Food & Nutrition Centre at the Mayo Clinic, warned that there is no official definition for a superfood and that all brands will try to claim that their product is the best.

"I don't think that there is one food out there that is going to cure all. Overall to improve your health, you should strive to have a bunch of nutrient-dense foods," she commented.

According to BBC Food, brightly coloured fruits and vegetables are deemed to be especially beneficial for health due to their high concentration of flavenoids.

These are known for their antioxidant properties, which could fight the free radicals that cause cancer.
