Eating almonds 'could reduce heart disease risk'


Incorporating almonds into a person's diet could reduce their risk of heart disease and high cholesterol, it has been claimed.

Researchers from the Almond Board in California gave test subjects varying amounts of the nut and tested the triglyceride levels in their blood.

It was found that those eating larger amounts experienced a slower release of fat, reducing triglycerides - which cause heart disease - in their blood.

An excess level of triglycerides in blood plasma is called hypertriglyceridemia.

Dr Sarah Berry from the Nutritional Sciences Division at Kings College London concluded: "An intact plant cell wall, as found in whole almonds, may impact on how much and how quickly fat is released into the blood."

In related news, research recently published in the Journal of Nutrition also showed that eating a potion of nuts a day could help to fight against heart disease, diabetes and gall bladder problems without leading to weight gain.
