Eggs should not be avoided completely by people looking to lose weight or adopt a healthy regime, one source has claimed.
Leila Barraj from the Centre for Chemical Regulation and Food Safety in California, said that eating one egg a day only increases the risk of heart disease by one per cent.
This is compared to smoking, being obese and a sedentary lifestyle, all of which increased the obesity risk by between 30 and 40 per cent.
"The health community should focus on meaningful recommendations when it comes to preventing heart disease, like smoking and obesity, not egg consumption," Ms Barraj said.
It was recently reported that advertising giant Charles Saatchi had lost four stone in nine months through eating nothing but three eggs at each meal.
