People who appear to be a normal body weight may still be suffering from high cholesterol and stored fat around their organs, an expert has claimed.
Ellen Mason, a cardiac nurse for the British Heart Foundation, said that people should not see being slim as an excuse not to exercise.
"We all eat too much saturated fat in the UK and we tend to have higher cholesterol levels than we should have. Even if you are a normal weight, your cholesterol level may be abnormal," she warned.
This opinion was echoed in October by Professor Adrian Bauman, director of the Australian Centre for Health Promotion, who told the Sydney Morning Herald that people who appear slim but act like inactive couch potatoes may be more at risk in terms of their health than people who are a little overweight but exercise regularly.
He also said that slim but inactive people could be more at risk of developing high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and diabetes than those who are active.
