Even small steps will help to beat diabetes, expert says


People in the UK can avoid becoming susceptible to Type 2 diabetes by ensuring that they lead a healthy lifestyle, making small changes where appropriate.

This is according to Pav Kalsi, a care advisor at Diabetes UK, who was reacting to new figures from the charity showing that one person is diagnosed with diabetes every three minutes in the UK.

"[People] just need to make sure [that] they're eating a healthy balanced diet, try to be more active and control their weight especially around the middle," she stressed.

Ms Kalsi added that nobody can be expected to make vast changes overnight, so a gradual approach is recommended for incorporating more exercise or a different diet.

Some 150,000 people were diagnosed as having diabetes last year and people who are obese are ten times more likely to develop the disease.

However, the actual number of people with diabetes could be much higher, since an estimated 500,000 may have the condition without knowing.
