Exercising for short periods 'can have significant benefits'


Exercising for short bursts could be better for you than slaving away at the gym, researchers have claimed.

Scientists from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh have said that doing four minutes of intense exercise such as riding an exercise bike twice a week could cut a person's chances of developing heart disease and diabetes.

James Timmons, an exercise biologist who led the study, said: "This is such a brief amount of exercise you can do it without breaking a sweat."

It is thought that short sessions of exercising break down glucose in the blood more effectively, helping it to be transported back into the muscle and safely stored.

This could be good news for people who feel unable to keep up with the NHS-recommended 30 minutes of exercise five times a week.
