Although the government is working hard to encourage healthy eating habits with its Change 4Life campaign, this message could be being contradicted by advertisements for food featured in popular magazines.
This is the conclusion of a study carried out by researchers at Newcastle University, who looked at food ads and found that 25.5 per cent were for foods high in salt and sugar, such as ready meals and chocolate bars.
Only 1.8 per cent of the ads featured were for fruit and vegetables.
Dr Jean Adams, who led the study, said this is unhelpful to families already battling to prepare healthy food amid the credit crunch.
"If we're constantly bombarded with images of unhealthy food every time we pick up a magazine then we're going to be swayed in what we choose," she remarked.
Anti-obesity campaigners have recently been campaigning for a ban on the advertising of fatty foods before the watershed.
