A team of researchers at Laval University in France have discovered a worrying correlation between high-fat diets and the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
The scientists studied mice that were fed high levels of animal fats and low levels of omega-3 against those who were given a healthier diet for nine months and then looked at the effects on their brains.
It was discovered that those who ate large amounts of fatty food had traces of a protein in the brain which is normally associated with the onset of Alzheimer's.
"We cannot state with any certainty that what we have observed among mice also occurs in humans, but there is no harm in eating less fat and more omega-3s," said the report's author Frederic Calon.
Anyone who is overweight may also be at greater risk from heart attacks or strokes in winter, as well as from developing other health problems such as diabetes and osteoarthritis.
