People who eat too much animal and saturated fat, such as red meat, could be putting themselves at a greater risk of developing cancer of the small intestine, it has been claimed.
According to a study carried out by the National Cancer Institute in the US, those with the highest intake of saturated fats were 3.18 times more likely to develop a cancerous tumour in this section of the digestive tract.
Dr Amanda Cross, who led the study that will be published in the journal Cancer Research, said the findings are important because this kind of cancer seems to be on the increase.
Diet and cancer of the small intestine have never been looked at together in a study of this kind before.
Earlier this month, diminutive Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria Parker said she is to cut red meat from her diet, replacing it with plenty of fish in a bid to lose weight and tone up.
