An investigation into the quality of food at NHS hospitals has revealed that a large number are not serving nutritionally-balanced meals.
Which? sent dieticians to 21 hospitals around the UK and found that of the meals tested, 86 per cent contained too much salt and 67 per cent contained too much saturated fat than is recommended under Food Standards Agency guidelines.
Only four hospitals had healthy options highlighted on their menus and one in five patients was dissatisfied with the choices available.
Nikki Ratcliff, head of services research at Which?, remarked: "Hospitals have a responsibility to serve and promote healthy food, so the situation at the moment is farcical. Although we did find some examples of good practice, most hospitals we visited really need to raise their game."
Eating too much saturated fat or too many calories raises the risk of obesity, which in turn increases the risk of developing heart disease.
This is because it raises blood cholesterol while lowering the body's 'good cholesterol'.
