Late bedtimes 'could cause obesity in later life'


People who do not get enough sleep as children may be more likely to be obese as adults, new research has suggested.

According to a study by researchers at Otago University in New Zealand, the number of hours people spend sleeping during childhood may be correlated to their weight in later life, with increased body mass index associated with shorter sleep time.

"Our findings suggest that sleep restriction could be a plausible contributing factor to the current epidemic of obesity," the reports concluded.

It suggested that the increase in obesity could be due to children going to bed later, which may in turn cause hormone imbalances leading to weight gain.

Alternatively, the researcher suggested that being tired cold result in a more sedentary lifestyle.
