Men who take up exercise in middle age 'could live longer'

Men who take up exercise in middle age could see the same benefits to their health as those who give up smoking.

This is according to new research from scientists at the Uppsala Clinical Research Centre in Sweden, who said that around half of men in the western world do not take part in any kind of physical exercise.

However, those who began exercising after the age of 50 were found to have the same life expectancy after ten years as those who had always exercised.

Lead researcher Karl Michaelsson said: "Efforts for promotion of physical activity, even among middle aged and older men, are important."

Anyone who is classified as obese (with a body mass index of over 30) is advised to seek advice before beginning a new exercise regime.

They may wish to consider cutting their intake of calories, potentially using weight loss supplements to help them, first.
