The NHS needs to adopt better publicity campaigns if it is to reduce obesity and promote healthy lifestyles, it has been claimed.
A report published by thinktank the King’s Fund points out that bad habits including smoking and overeating are costing the NHS more than £6 billion a year, but suggests that campaigns against them are not targeted enough.
Dr Anna Dixon, director of policy at the organisation, told the BBC: "The methods used to promote public health need to be more modern, using the most advanced techniques and technologies."
Suggested strategies included using social analysis and geodemographics to pinpoint where motivation to change is most needed.
Last month, health secretary Alan Johnson said that 9,000 people now die of obesity-related conditions including diabetes and heart disease every year.
