Overweight adolescents 'should still eat dairy'

Adolescents trying to lose weight should not cut out dairy produce from their diet, one expert has said.

Professor Connie Weaver and a team of researchers from Purdue University found that calcium is particularly important during times of growth, Australian publication Farm Online reports.

"We know for certain that calcium intake during the adolescent years can shape bone health for the remainder of a person's life," Professor Weaver said.

She added that most teenagers should aim to eat three or four servings of dairy produce each day in order to protect their bones and to manage their body weight.

Earlier this month, scientists at the University of Tennessee found that eating three portions of dairy food a day could help people to maintain their weight, even though they may actually be eating more calories, Reuters reported.

This was thought to be because it helps people to feel full, while providing less fat than may be the case from other foods.
