People in Britain 'aim to walk more often'

Improving fitness levels over the coming months seems to be top of the agenda for many people, according to a new poll.

Research carried out by PruHealth found that 70 per cent of people aim to make walking a more regular part of their daily routine due to the benefits it offers.

Currently, the average person in the UK walks for approximately 43 minutes a day.

PruHealth's chief executive officer, Shaun Matisonn, said: "Walking is a great form of exercise so it's very encouraging to see so many people wanting to incorporate it into their daily lives."

However, the expert added that people should be aiming to walk for around 75 minutes a day - the equivalent of 10,000 steps - if they are to see substantial benefits.

NHS recommendations state that adults should aim to do 30 minutes of exercise five times a week in order to keep obesity, heart disease and diabetes at bay.
