Researchers produce 'road map of death'
With appropriate timing given the proximity to Halloween, researchers at the Universities of Bristol and Sheffield have produced a document entitled the Grim Reaper's Road Map to show how people in different regions of Britain are most likely to die.
The macabre research was produced with a serious aim in mind though, namely to educate people of the importance of a healthy lifestyle in the fight against different diseases.
It was discovered that heart attacks and chronic heart disease were the top causes of death, claiming over 3.7 million lives each year. People in the north were most likely to succumb to this.
Strokes were next on the list, with more than 1.7 million cases, representing 11.48 per cent of all deaths in the UK.
Dr Mary Shaw, one of the report's co-authors, said: "Heart disease, cancers and respiratory diseases [still] claim lives in their thousands. The Grim Reaper's road map is a stark reminder that we will all die from something, sooner or later."
