Restaurant meals 'contain dangerous levels of salt'

People who eat out in restaurants could be ingesting dangerously high levels of salt in their meals.

This is the discovery of researchers at Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) and Trading Standards, which looked at the salt content of 96 meals from popular restaurant chains.

They found that almost 75 per cent had higher than the recommended amount of six grams a day, with salt also hidden in desserts and side dishes on top of the main course.

Carrie Bolt, a nutritionist for CASH, said: "No restaurant would dream of adding sugar to someone's coffee or tea without asking them - why don't they give people the same choice when it comes to salt?"

The news comes after Dr Rachel Thompson, science programme manager for the World Cancer Research Fund, warned that some well-known brands of soup contained half the daily recommended intake of salt for an adult, which could cause stomach cancer.
