Labels showing how much salt is in different foods should be compulsory on restaurant menus, it has been claimed.
Carrie Bolt, a spokesperson for Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash), said that while a lot of good work has been done in terms of reducing the salt found in supermarket foods, salt eaten outside the home is still a major problem.
"I think that if you put salt labels on the food on the menus, then people can see how much salt is in the food and then they can make an educated choice," she pointed out.
Ms Bolt added that eating too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, which can then cause strokes and heart attacks.
Her comments come after a recent Cash study discovered that some restaurant meals contain more than twice the amount of salt that adults should be eating in an entire day.
