Simple walking 'could help weight loss'


Exercise regimes do not have to be intense and vigorous in order to offer health benefits, one expert has pointed out.

In an article for the Daily Mail, Dr Mark Hamer of University College London said that simply walking uses the calf muscles, the thigh muscles and the gluteals, as well as raising the metabolism.

He recommended that adults should aim to be moderately active - where the heart rate is elevated, but the person can still hold a conversation - for 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

"Recent evidence suggests that regular walking reduces the risk of heart disease by up to 30 per cent," he added.

Last month, GP and obesity specialist Carol Cooper said that people should not be put off if they have a lot of weight to lose, focusing instead on the fact that even losing a few pounds can go a long way.
