Slim people 'may be fat on the inside'

People who appear slim but act like inactive couch potatoes may be more at risk in terms of their health than people who are a little overweight but exercise regularly.

This is according to Professor Adrian Bauman, director of the Australian Centre for Health Promotion, who said that people should not get so hung up on seeing instant results, but should continue to exercise.

He added that slim but inactive people could be more at risk of developing high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and diabetes than those who are active.

"What they don't seem to be understanding is that it is far, far better for them to continue [exercising] even if they don't lose weight because they'll be much healthier for it," Professor Bauman urged.

Earlier this month, Dr Carol Cooper said that people should not be put off if they have a lot of weight to lose, since even a small amount of weight loss can offer a number of health benefits.
