Supermarkets should do more to ensure that poorer families can afford to eat healthily by cutting prices and reducing levels of salt and fat in prepared foods, a new report has concluded.
According to research by the consumer group Which?, 25 per cent of shoppers are cutting back on the recommended five portions of fruit and veg a day because finances are tight.
However, 60 per cent of people would buy more fresh produce if it was cheaper, the poll found.
Which? chief policy adviser, Sue Davies, said it is not easy for people who may be feeling the pinch to make healthy choices.
"We want barriers to healthy eating removed so people can put their good intentions into practice," she added.
The government has come under fire of late for failing to help curb rising levels of obesity - according to the NHS, the number of people having anti-obesity surgery has risen by 40 per cent in the last year.
